Job post: 250 Academic Fellowships at the University of Leeds

The University of Leeds’ biggest ever recruitment of academic researchers includes exciting new opportunities to join the Institute for Transport Studies (ITS).

A £100m investment (250greatminds.leeds.ac.uk) launched on Wednesday 1 October will recruit 250 early career academic fellows over the next three years. Successful applicants will embark on a five year structured development programme, leading to an established position as an Associate Professor.

Applications are invited to three of the Institute’s core themes, but we also welcome informal inquiries from those with the skills and potential to secure a fellowship in other thematic areas:

  • Big Data and Transport Modelling
  • Transport Resilience
  • Vehicle and Road Automation

Enhancing the network efficiency: air transport and sustainability

NECTAR Cluster 1 workshop 7-8 May 2015, Cranfield, United Kingdom

There are many reasons to strive to improve the efficiency of transport networks. While economic reasons used to dominate the debate, environmental reasons are gaining importance but not, for now, social reasons although increasingly equity is seen as another dimension of efficiency. Air transport networks are a special and important case to examine network efficiency. Demand for air transport is steadily growing over time, on average over 4-5% per annum and this has been taking place for several decades and is predicted to continue in the near future. This is fuelled by economic growth and is seen as an important contributor to growth, but air transport requires heavy investment and is costly to operate. Call for papers XIII NECTAR International Conference

Smart Transport—Smart Planning

It is our pleasure to announce that the XIII NECTAR International Conference will be held at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan (United States of America), from 14 to 16 June 2015.

The transportation field is undergoing a technological revolution in information and communication technologies including “big” data, connected vehicles, modeling techniques, and—just over the horizon—self-driving cars. For these smart transport developments to fulfil their promise, they need to be guided by and deployed in service of smart planning: a planning that improves the fairness of transportation’s distribution and lessens its environmental impact and societal costs. Technological innovations must be implemented in a way that applies the lessons of history on the relationship of transportation and urban form to forestall unwanted outcomes. Fundamentally, these advances must be part of a shift that values accessibility over simple movement as the overarching purpose of transportation. The conference will facilitate interaction between North American and European transport and communications researchers on all these topics.
