Research Studentships for PhD student

Applications are open for one Research Studentship for PhD Student, within the framework of project Growth or Relocation? Transport Accessibility and Economic Activity Location (TASSEL)/ Associação do Instituto Superior Técnico para a Investigação e o Desenvolvimento (IST-ID), PTDC/GES-GCE/4046/2021, financed by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC), under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Transportation, Geography, Urban and Regional Studies

Admission Requirements: To be enrolled at a PhD.

Workplan: The post holder will carry out research, and support various activities in coordination with the rest of the team, in the project “Growth or Relocation? Transport Accessibility and Economic Activity Location” (TASSEL). The objectives of the project are to study the effect of changes in road and rail-based accessibility in Portugal since the 1970s on the spatial distribution of economic activity, particularly, firm/job creation and firm/job relocation. The main activities to be carried by the fellow are described below:

 The creation and management of a GIS database describing the evolution of Portugal’s road and rail networks and services since the 1970s. The fellow will work with a pre-existing GIS-based road network covering the period from 1971 to 2019 and expand it to include a GIS-based rail network. Besides geocoding the evolution of the national road and rail systems, there will also be a more localized analysis of Lisbon’s metropolitan area transport system. The construction of the GIS database for the rail network will involve the incorporation of information about service levels and timetables over the period under study and will require consulting historical data in the documentation center of CP – Comboios de Portugal and Fertagus.

 The incorporation in the GIS-based transport database of demographic and economic data from non-GIS secondary data sources (e.g. Census and administrative databases), with support from other researchers of the project.

 The development of indicators describing the evolution of the road and rail-networks, including indicators of transport accessibility at the national and regional/local levels, and the associated changes in the urban spatial structure.

 The production of a manual / article describing the construction of the GIS dataset and its associated outputs (e.g., accessibility indicators) in order to support the future use of the GIS-database by other researchers. The spatial GIS-database and respective manual will be available online for interactive visualization.

 Work with other team members, based both at IST-ID and ISEG, in the development of scientific papers relating the evolution of the rail and road networks and the resulting changes in accessibility levels with the location of firms and jobs.
